Cook Islands vacatiosn are the stuff of dreams. This is one of the best destinations in the South Pacific for a laid back beach holiday in a small and very relaxed island atmosphere. Rarotonga is often likened to Hawaii of 30 years ago whilst Aitutaki Lagoon has more picturesque beaches than Bora Bora Lagoon in Tahiti. In all, your Cook Islands vacation will be one that stays in your memory for many years to come. The main island of Rarotonga is location of the international airport and where many tourists spend their entire holiday. Rarotonga has high tropical mountains and beautiful beaches and swimming lagoons. It is one of the few places in the South Pacific where you will find lots of small properties offering just a handful of private beach bungalows set amongst coconut groves. Many of these beach bungalows offer self catering facilities and along with the excellent choice of restaurants around the island, you are sure to have a memorable time. The exquisite Aitutaki Lagoon offers pure escapism with uninhabited islands to visit and gorgeous beaches with tranquil lagoons. Aitutaki can be visited from Rarotonga on a day tour (it's a 40-minute flight) but to really enjoy the pace of life and surroundings it's best to spend at least 2 nights on island. There are lots of small beach bungalows as well as several mall resorts and a couple of excellent restaurants. ![]() The following Cook Islands tourist info facts should help answer any questions you have: Cook Islands climate is hot and sunny all year round (day/night average temperature is Jan 22/28; July 20/26) with higher rainfall and more mosquitoes from Dec to April. The Cook Islands is one of the main stopovers on the trans Pacific Air New Zealand route between Australia / New Zealand and North America. There is no specific high / low season for tourism and rates remain the same throughout the year. Both international and domestic flights are aften full during Christmas as local Cook Islanders return home from overseas for their holidays. The Cook Islands is a moderately expensive destination with prices slightly higher than those in New Zealand where most things are imported from. Tipping is not encouraged and contrary to Polynesian culture. Most credit cards and travellers cheques are readily accepted and there are ATM machines at Westpac and ANZ banks on Rarotonga. Currency is the New Zealand dollar. English is widely spoken although the local dialect is Cook Island Maori. Crime is virtually non-existent in this extremely friendly and graceful island group. Electricity is 240 volts. The water is safe to drink although bottle water is readily available from the shops. Mosquitoes are the only real pest and are most prevalent in the rainy season from Dec to April. |
